Math
The math curriculum we use is Progress in Mathematics by Sadlier-Oxford. There are twelve chapters. Each chapter begins with an introduction based on previous knowledge or strategies used. During each lesson, as a class we will work the practice problems or worksheet together while learning new information or reviewing previous. After practice, the students will have independent time to work, or they may also choose to work with the teacher as well. Each lesson builds off the previous one. At the end of each lesson is a short quiz and a chapter test at the end. Students do have the opportunity to use manipulatives such as counters, snap blocks, white boards, etc. to help them engage in their learning. For extra support, they will have the opportunity to work on current skills on their Chromebooks using IXL or ST Math software.
Religion
Second Grade is such an exciting and special time in our students' relationship with the Lord. The Word of Life curriculum is firmly rooted in Sacred Scripture and the history of Salvation. This curriculum deepens our student's virtue and character formation to use in practical situations. The Word of Life series teaches students the truth about their identity, dignity and purpose. It also prepares our students to receive the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation. They will know that God is active in their lives through the liturgy and the sacraments. Lastly, Word of Life incorporates several methods of prayer, so the students understand how important prayer is in their relationship with God and others.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum is my World Social Studies: We Explore People and Places by SAVVAS Learning Company. This curriculum was developed especially for Texas beginning with learning about our communities and being responsible citizens. Each chapter has a big question which is answered through each chapter. Examples of chapter questions are How do people get what they need? and How does life change throughout history?
Science
Our Science curriculum is STEM scopes. This curriculum allows students the opportunity to be introduced to new science concepts, become confident in their critical thinking, and engage in many science experiments. Each unit is about two weeks long and during that time we explore many aspects of our topic. For example, when talking about properties of matter, we will take a day to talk about solid, liquids, and gas before moving onto how the three work together.
