My name is Ann Marie “Anna” Guillen, and I have the privilege of serving as the Music Director at St. Pius X Catholic School for the 2026–2027 academic year, teaching students from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. This is my sixth year as a member of the St. Pius X family, and I am truly honored to accompany your children as they grow in their musical knowledge, creativity, and appreciation for the gift of music.
At St. Pius X, our music curriculum is aligned with the standards established by the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The TEKS framework is built upon four foundational strands: Foundations: Music Literacy, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Relevance, and Critical Evaluation and Response. Together, these strands guide students as they develop music literacy through reading, writing, performing, and creating music; strengthen vocal and instrumental performance skills; explore music's historical and cultural significance; and learn to listen, analyze, and respond thoughtfully to a variety of musical experiences.
Our program utilizes MusicPlayOnline.com, a comprehensive digital curriculum that provides engaging lessons in music theory, notation, rhythm, history, composition, and performance. Students in Kindergarten through Middle School will have access to this resource throughout the school year using their individual student access codes, allowing them to reinforce classroom learning both at school and at home.
Beginning in Kindergarten, students develop their musical foundation by using their first and most important instrument—their voice. Through singing, movement, listening activities, and weekly school liturgies, students build confidence while learning essential musical concepts. During the spring semester, students further strengthen their rhythmic and music literacy skills through hands-on instruction with classroom instruments, including recorders and bucket drums.
Our Pre-Kindergarten students also participate in music instruction twice each month on Fridays, where they are introduced to the fundamentals of music through age-appropriate songs, movement, rhythm activities, and musical play. Additionally, all students are expected to participate in our Annual Advent Concert in December, a cherished tradition that celebrates the season while showcasing the musical growth of our students.
Students in 2nd through 8th Grade are invited to become part of our Student Music Ministry, where they have the opportunity to lead music during weekly school liturgies and select Sunday parish Masses. This ministry allows students to deepen their faith, develop leadership skills, and serve our school and parish community through the gift of music.
Students in 2nd through 8th Grade also have the opportunity to participate in the Archdiocese of San Antonio's annual Sing at the Cross Choral Competition. We are incredibly proud that our choir has earned Superior ratings—the highest distinction awarded—for the past four consecutive years in the categories of Liturgical A Cappella, Liturgical with Accompaniment, and Religious Contemporary. These accomplishments reflect the dedication, teamwork, and commitment of our students.
Music is a gift from God that inspires creativity, builds confidence, strengthens discipline, and brings people together in worship and celebration. I look forward to partnering with you throughout the school year as we nurture your child's musical talents and help them continue to grow as faithful "Leaders for Christ."
Blessings to you and your family,
Ann Marie "Anna" Guillen Music Director St. Pius X Catholic School
